A Print Of An Original Painting Of A Victorian Letterbox
Catalogue Number: OPP015
The British Post Office first encouraged people to provide letter boxes in the front door of homes back in 1849. The Post office also provided similar boxes at post offices for people to send letters. They appeared in the wall and as pillar boxes on street corners similar letter boxes were provided at post offices for people sending letters. The oldest of these boxes is thought to be that of the Wakefield Post Office which has a date on it of 1809 on it and is thought to be the oldest British letter box still in existence.
The example displayed is my interpretation of a "Victorian Letter Box" which I saw in the village of Great Bircham in Norfolk.
