West Newton is situated on the Royal Sandringham estate in Norfolk

West Newton Church in Winter snow

Catalogue Number: PN003

The church is one of several that the Royal Family attend during the Christmas period each year. In common with all other churches on the estate, it is illuminated externally at night when the Queen is at Sandringham House.

The church contains stained glass windows in memory of Captain Frank Beck, who lead King George V’s own Sandringham company. All of these men were volunteers from the Sandringham estate. They were farm labourers, gardeners household servants and gamekeepers, and Mr Beck was the King’s agent. On 12th August 1915, they were sent into battle against the Turks at Gallipolli. Sadly all of these men were killed when the whole battalion disappeared.

A film called "All the King’s men" was made about the tragedy.

This photograph was taken from the lytchgate on a winter’s day after a snow shower.
