Crabbing at Wells Next The Sea .. Norfolk
Catalogue Number: PN006
The strange thing about Wells Next The Sea is that it isn’t ... next to the sea! In fact it is nearly a mile from open water.
The town quay, and the town itself are connected to the beautiful beach area and lifeboat station by a long high banked road built to consolidate the narrow channel to the sea. This has enabled Wells to be the only commercially viable port on the north Norfolk coast. The large loading gantry seen in this shot was built around 1906.
However in this photograph I was trying to capture the fun of the simple things of life. A hook, line, bait and a bucket, was all these children (and others!) needed to have endless fun dangling bait into the water far below them to catch small crabs.
