Vikings sailed up a creek through the saltmarshes in the first millennium and established Holkham, which in Danish means "ship town". On a north Norfolk coast full of nature reserves, Holkham is probably the most extensive. A stunning place with sea, sand dunes, and woods, and, of course, Holkham Hall, owned by the Earl of Leicester.
