Wild red deer
Catalogue Number: PW013
The red deer is the UK's largest land mammal, reaching weights of up to 200 kilograms, although this chap was photographed in northern Scotland, where they tend to be a bit smaller. They live for up to about 18 years, but they do suffer a great rate of loss during infancy.
These deer tend to stay in large single gender groups in the scottish highlands, but that is not so in other areas of the UK. During the "rut" or breeding season the male returns to the females' home ground, perform elaborate displays and use their antlers to compete with others for the attentions of the female.
