Wolves - the species from which all dogs are descended.
Catalogue Number: PW015
There are thought to be about 16,000 or so wolves in Europe, although few if any European countries boast substantial numbers. They are seen these days in remote, mountainous or densely forested regions, where they can live without coming into conflict with human beings
Many countries such as Sweden, Norway, Spain and Portugal have local laws preventing the killing of their small wolf populations, except in certain circumstances where farmers are able to protect their domestic livestock.
Wolves are carnivores and as such develop well to diverse habitats. They mainly prey on hoofed animals such as deer and wild boar. However domestic cattle are cloven hoofed so they too become prey. Hence one of the areas of conflict with human beings.
This image was taken in a large wildlife park in the mountains of North Norway just before sunset. They have an enormous enclosure which was both hilly and densely forested. I saw several trails in the snow leading into the forest. They are a very well managed pack of eight very healthy animals.
I felt very privileged to see them in such a natural environment. I watched them for some time going into and coming out of the forest, and was amazed by how they were living so well together. The strength was obviously in the pack!
